How Trump Defied The Experts & Forged A Breakthrough
In The Middle East

Source: The National Review
Perhaps the most impregnable piece of conventional wisdom over the last three and a half years was that there was no way that Jared Kushner could possibly move the ball on Middle East peace.

Understandably enough. After all, Kushner already had a vast policy portfolio in the Trump White House and no prior diplomatic experience. The idea that he could succeed where people who had devoted their careers to working on this problem had failed seemed far-fetched — at best.

But here we are, with Israel and the United Arab Emirates signing a historic normalization agreement at the White House. Bahrain has now also agreed to normalize relations with Israel, a move it couldn’t have made without Saudi assent.

All of this is what Joe Biden might call a BFD. When the three leaders — President Trump, Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed — were considering their handiwork over the phone, according to a senior administration official, “MBZ said, ‘Hey, 2020’s been a really tough year. This has got to be the best news of 2020.’ And the president said, ‘Yeah, what do you think, Bibi?’ And Bibi said, ‘Are you kidding me? This is the best news in the last 20 years.........Continued’”
What say you?............... After all, for the last 40+ years the collective abilities of all the World's Political Professionals haven't been able to even scratch the surface......they said it was impossible........It couldn't be done in our lifetimes..........Along comes this American President, A Non-Politician, A Brash & Crude New York City Business Man, & within 3 1/2 years he finds a way to make it happen, when none before him could.............What say you?

Peaceful relations between nations in the middle east is a good thing, isn't it?

I just laugh whenever anyone claims to have 'suceeded' at bringing peace to the ME. How many peace treaties etc have been signed over the last 40 or 50 years>? How many lasted longer than it took a drunk to find his next beer?

It is total bullshit. Israel is not in conflict and has never been in conflict with any of the countries it just made peace with.

It is a Trump stunt and a distraction.

UAE and Bahrain are rump states. Their population of citizens ~1 million in UAE, is miniscule compared to total population ~9 million including visa holders. If there was a war and all the non-citizens left these countries couldn't even operate their sewage systems and would collapse and the UAE population would drop from 9 million to 0.5 million as those Emiratis who could afford it would also head for the safety of Europe and the USA.

Emiratis are better at running than fighting.

Neither UAE or Bahrain could defeat a busload of quadriplegics in a war. Last time there were street protests in Bahrain the Saudi military had to intervene because the despots of Bahrain would have been overthrown.

This is a diversion by Trump and has nothing to do with peace.

Yep. You nailed it.

The agreements reflect a geopolitical alliance among repressive regimes to expand the U.S. sphere of influence in the Middle East.

You heard it here first.....Leftists, have joined in an alliance against Peace in the Middle East......The US demon-RATS, & now the 'Australian Alliance of PoliticalAnimals Against Peace' have joined ranks to decry Middle Eastern Peace.....Why? Simply because it was brokered by the Mean-Bad Orange Man who stole the 2016 Election from them---the election everyone said they couldn't lose!!

Success, in their world, really sux big time, but that's one thing they have nothing to worry about......they will never experience the dis-satisfaction of success.

Both Bahrain and UAE are nothings except existing USA muppets and existing hosts for massive US bases. This is Trump window dressing, and ramping up what is SFA. While Arabs occupy the ME, their Home Lands, there will always be fighting. That will be exacerbated while the State of Israel remains where it never should never have been put. 'Blood on the sands' has been going on for centuries and Trump is not even a low speed bump on that highway.

Sorry aussie...... noted

what trump is doing is nothing more than trying to win an election.

He does not give a shiny shite about the middle east ( except for Saudi Arabia as he has properties there) even though they took down the twin towers.

what is dangerous is that it's all another ruse from a conman that stupid Americans will fall for, and means just about as much as a photo op with a bible

Ask Palestine what they think Seth....... peace to the middle east my arse

The countries in the deal are tiny and have they ever sent significant force to any of the arab attempted invasions of Isreal?

The deal, like Saudi playing nice with Israel, is to upset the Iranians. Trump still wants his war with Iran. Maybe he will do it via proxies?

None of these proxies including the Saudis have balls. All these proxies are involved in the war on Yemen which they have not won after 5 years. If they are not winning they are losing.

These pathetic proxies also hired Western mercenaries because the Trump proxies are better at running than fighting.

Well, I think it would be interesting to ask the Bahranis and UAE and Israel if it's all just a ruse. Probably not to them.

When one hates someone, nothing that person does can possibly be good. If Trump accidentally spilled his wine into his salad and inadvertently discovered the cure for cancer, our Democrats would be against it.

The Palestinians are a sticky problem. Who speaks for them? The Palestinian Authority? Hamas? Fatah?

Interesting ...

Following the failures of the Second Intifada, a younger generation is emerging that cares less about nationalist ideology than in economic growth. This has been a source of tension between some of Palestinians political leadership and Palestinian business professionals who desire economic cooperation with Israelis. At an international conference in Bahrain, Palestinian businessman Ashraf Jabari said, “I have no problem working with Israel. It is time to move on. ... The Palestinian Authority does not want peace. They told the families of the businessmen that they are wanted [by police] for participating in the Bahrain workshop.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestinians

I do not believe Trump wants a war with Iran. He is willing to punish Iran for attacking our soldiers and diplomats, but a full scale war? Nope.

None of these proxies including the Saudis have balls. All these proxies are involved in the war on Yemen which they have not won after 5 years. If they are not winning they are losing.

I agree that none of those countries have any real capability to export military force, and the ongoing struggle over Yemen is a good example. I am reminded that the Iran-Iraq War lasted 8 long years and it was a draw. Eventually, everyone just went home. And yet the U.S. military wiped away the Iraqi military in about 2 weeks.

Still, peace agreements are a good precedent to set, even if they are with insignificant military powers like Bahrain and UAE.

Trump does want a war with Iran. However, Iran is much stronger than Iraq was in 2003.

Iran's attack on Saudi Arabia shocked the Pentagon because Saudi Arabia had the latest anti-missile defense systems which didn't save them.

The Iran attack on the US military base in Iraq also surprised the Pentagon because of it's precision and damage including PTSD damage to 109+ American troops from the sound waves of explosions as well.

I believe that UAE, Bahrain, and Kuwait would cease to exist if there was a war involving Iran in the gulf. This is one of the reasons Trump doesn't want to attack Iran.

It is arguable that Iran shot down that Ukrainian civil aircraft to demonstrate it's missile capabilities.

Number of U.S. troops with brain injuries from Iranian missile attacks now 109
The Pentagon announced Monday that 45 more U.S. service members were diagnosed with mild traumatic brain injury from the strikes on Iraqi bases, up from 65.

Dozens more U.S. service members have been diagnosed with traumatic brain injuries following last month's Iranian missile attacks that targeted American forces at two Iraqi bases, the Defense Department said Monday, bringing the total to 109.
Of those, 76 patients have since been returned to duty, the Pentagon said in a statement. There were 45 more cases since the department's last report, and all 109 patients have been diagnosed with what it called "mild traumatic brain injury."

"This is a snapshot in time and numbers can change," the Defense Department said. ...

In a war with Iran, Iran would suffer immense damage, and the U.S. very little. The U.S. could inflict that damage without even putting boots on the ground. It's not a question of which side would win. The reason Trump does not want a war with Iran is that there is nothing to be gained by such a war, and the real losers would be the people of Iran. Trump has been working to reduce our military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan, he has tried to have a dialogue and reduce tension with North Korea, and he has helped broker peace agreements with Israel and other countries. His track record is working for peace and ending these endless wars, at least America's involvement in them anyway. Avoiding a war with Iran is consistent with everything he has been working towards. He has shown that he will retaliate if provoked, but that he is not looking for a new war to get mired in.
