Yes, you are probably right. Lydia was free with the use of the cattle prod, for all that the actress playing her said she played the role as if she loved the handmaidens—I did not see any love, just control, domination, punishment for displeasing Lydia. As per the Zimbardo Prison experiment.

Not really. Reminds me of the Zimbardo Prison experiment.

She has much more status and power than the handmaids. A better choice than the colonies.

I’d rather think that she has been as abused and manipulated as much as the handmaidens as all the women are, in that hell hole.

It was a beauty, the one air to ground flash I saw was really thick and bright, a few volts involved for sure!

She was amazing in Mad Men too ... as hard as that series was to watch for me. Brilliant, but tough for a feminist.

And by the wonders of the internet, here it is:

I saw Elisabeth Moss interviewed on Colbert and she showed a clip from a future episode filmed at the Lincoln Memorial.

Apparently they turned up there (Washington is "Gilead on steroids" in the show, says Moss), all decked out in their garb and filmed, to the general delight of tourists ... who would applaud at the end of takes and stuff.

But what an image in Trump's America, yeah?

Just finished watching Ep 3 online.

June to pick 5 women, from among hundreds of female captives, to become marthas (cooks/housekeepers to the Commanders) but refuses, even when told that then all the female captives would die, none saved. As she points out, she is not responsible for the captives’ plight: that is Gilead’s responsibility. Pretty powerful stuff.

Parallels:

UN CALLS U.S. ABORTION LAWS ‘TORTURE’ United Nations deputy high commissioner for human rights Kate Gilmore said the abortion restrictions recently passed in several U.S. states are a “crisis” akin to “torture.” “This is gender-based violence against women,” she said. [HuffPost]
