Mmmm! What a good tasting beer! (Therefore, Aussie would hate it.)

Made by the Double Mountain Brewery in beautiful Hood River, Oregon.

6.0%, 55 IBU

Pleasingly distinct hoppiness that lingers long after the swallow. Herbal notes too. From the website ...

"Challenger hops, Pilsner malt, and our house yeast strain are the headliners in this easy pale. The result is agile, alluringly herbal, and supremely refreshing. The dry hop really makes this one sing."

Sure wish I could share it with you guys.

I will look for it.

I have tried three Brit beers over the past week—nice, unremarkable.

Bread is the staff of life. Beer is one reason for living!

Try finding a loaf of barley bread some time. Tastes fine, tells you why barley is the grain for brewing.

Spotted this Sierra Nevada Sampler in the store and bought it.

Sierra Nevada Sampler.JPG

There are a couple of beers I've never had before. This one is called 3 Weight Session IPA. Made with 6 different varieties of hops and 5 different malts, this is meant to be a tasty, yet easy drinking brew. Only 4.0% alcohol and 38 IBU, this is crisp and tasty and doesn't knock you on your ass. Perfect for outdoor activity in the back country or the back yard.

Reminds me a lot of the Deschutes Mirror Pond I often drink. Very similar.

I drank a couple glasses champers Sunday and was not going to drink any booze this week.

However—a birthday party tonight—have just the one glass of a nice red I will bring: Saltram’s Old Vine Grenache 2017.

New study shows that beer makes men turn into women!

Now, as if everything else wasn't bad enough, we find out that beer isn't good for you!!

Beer contains female hormones. Yes, that's right, FEMALE hormones!

Last month, Montreal University scientists released the results of a recent analysis that revealed the presence of female hormones in beer.

The theory is that Beer contains female hormones (hops contain Phytoestrogens) and that by drinking enough beer, men turn into women.

To test the theory, 100 men each drank 8 large drafts of beer within a one (1) hour period.

It was then observed that 100% of the test subjects, yes, 100% of all these men:

1) Argued over nothing

2) Refused to apologize when obviously wrong.

3) Gained weight.

4) Talked excessively without making sense.

5) Became overly emotional

6) Couldn't drive.

7) Failed to think rationally, and

8) Had to sit down while urinating.

No further testing was considered necessary!!

Yeah, but seriously overdoing the beer regularly gives you breasts, as in boobs.

I had a very hoppy brew at my local brewery tonight called "Flirting With Disaster". 97 IBU, 7.1%

In fact, I had two.

That's how they serve some cocktails at my Golf Club. Not very aesthetic.

Yes sir!

The place has changed hands. It is now "The Barn Door". That is a likeness of the barn door on the jar from a family farm dating back to their grandfather's day. It had been the door to a hop dryer, but their family quit the business when Prohibition came in, and they moved the door to their barn.

Right.

I am drinking a seven sheds Wille Warmer.

A dark ale, not a porter or stout. No info on the label, will look up their website later. Nice enough, a gorgeous light tan head that sticks around. Beer is not filtered and is bottle conditioned (small, in-bottle ferment to create the fizz.)

Caramelly nose, malty-caramelly taste. Enough bitterness—this is an English Brown Ale, similar to English Milds.

Ah milds, forgotten in this age of insane amounts of hops. Great in a Tassie winter tho! Malty malty malty! Some hops.

This was good. Grapefruit and pine notes. Thirst Trap from Breakside Brewery in Portland.

Grapefruit—Simcoe hops!

I used citrusy hops in my Christmas Ale Pack: “Dark, powerful and spiced like a Christmas pudding” or something like that went the blurb. BIG pack: 3Kg part mash plus steep a lot of dark grains separate from the mash expensive with a substantial and complex hop bill and I advised on the spices to use (cassia not cinnamon, star anise, cloves etc not ginger (can taste very coarse in a beer.) etc. Eventually I had to make a cut down Pack to be brewed in Sep (be too alcohol hot if the full pack was brewed in Sep plus hop and spice bills reduced.) Told the guys (mostly, I had two female mash brewers as customers I was pleased to note*) to have a stubby or two at Christmass (serve when the pud hit the table) and keep the rest for the following winter (be good for 2 winters but they had to use 2 cans unhopped malt extract and an extract “twang” always develops. Full mash, bump the alcohol up to say 8% and keep it for 3-5 yearsif you have the willpower :bgrin )

Anyway, the hop bill was meant to impart nice citrusy and sweet aroma, some Goldings but mostly US hops.

* There were no beer gods—Dionysus was a wino—just beer goddesses in the Fertile Crescent and other places beer was brewed. In England women used to brew the ale for the household and any surplus was sold—these were alewives. In the big country houses/manors the housekeeper would also do the brewing—boil the clothes in the copper Monday ad boil wort in it Tuesday kind of thing. So I was pleased to have a couple of real (full mash) brewers of the feminine persuasion. Of course fully industrial brewing put these brewstresses out of work.
