Germany protest: Tens of thousands march against far right

Image

More than 100,000 people have been marching in the German capital Berlin to protest against xenophobia and the increasing influence of the far right.

Rights groups organised the rally, as marchers held placards reading "Indivisible" and "United against racism".

The BBC's Jenny Hill in Berlin says even the organisers seemed surprised by the turnout.

Support for the anti-immigration AfD party has risen in recent years.

The Alternative for Germany entered parliament for the first time last year, becoming the biggest opposition party, and is expected to make a strong showing in elections in the southern state of Bavaria on Sunday.

Marchers walked through central Berlin, rallying at the Brandenburg Gate.

The hashtag #indivisible featured strongly on the march
Many said they were defending human rights and tolerance, particularly of migrants.

"I'm worried that we are not there for the others, and that we just don't bother or care about loads of people who really need our help," said one demonstrator.

"Nobody just comes because they are bored."

One woman said: "There are so many people who believe they can abuse human rights and questions of equality and so on, and it's time to say no, there are other people who just want to be open and open-minded."

Gold flags and homemade banners glittered in the autumn sunshine as the march slowly moved across the city.

The mass protest - officially aimed at promoting an open society - was organised by hundreds of groups with different agendas and political affiliations.

But most of the participants were united by their concern about the influence of the far right on German politics and society.

Three years after Angela Merkel welcomed refugees to Germany, the politics of migration still divides opinion - and even now it has the power to bring citizens on to the streets.

Organisers of Saturday's rally say that more than 240,000 attended. Police said the number of participants was "in the low hundreds of thousands".

AfD are hoping to enter Bavaria's state parliament for the first time in elections on 14 October
Theresa Hartmann, spokeswoman for the #unteilbar (indivisible) movement, said only 40,000 had been expected.

The march is partly as a response to the rise of the AfD, which has seen a particularly strong rise in support in eastern parts of Germany.

In August, far-right groups held protests in Chemnitz and other cities after the fatal stabbing of a German man blamed on migrants.

The arrival of more than a million migrants in the country in 2015 boosted support for the party, although immigration levels have since fallen sharply.

I say nothing will change. Just note this one of my posts and see in 2-3 years. Bulgaria is currently seeing a huge influx of German migrants of all ages. Varna is becoming more German than ever. And British. This means what? It's a lost cause and they know it. The mice are abandoning ship lol.

How is not wanting your borders flooded with hordes of people who care nothing about your country be considered xennophobia?

My son almost died from meningitis trying to be seen at the ER 24 years ago. The room was filled with illegals who come to the ER when they have a common cold. My dad couldn't give his construction company away when he retired because of having to compete with illegal alien labor working off the books. I've lost 3 friends to the crimes of illegal aliens. A friend of mine was left stranded in downtown Dallas with his grandson after an illegal caused a wreck and abandoned his car and ran. Illegals flood our school systems and bring diseases that we eradicated decades ago in America. They bring drugs and crime to America.

And these people don't feel any animosity towards America, they just want to take advantage of us. These people entering Europe are being driven from their home countries and infiltrated by people with ill intent. Germany will regret their decisions soon, if they don't already. You would think that the Cologne train station incident would have been enough warning.

I like the signature. Lovely irony. Yes, I imagine that Mexican flood is causing issues, but I doubt a Trump Wall is gonna stop it. Dunno what will. Maybe take the sugar off the table. No work, no medical assistance...just go home?

As for Europe.....well, they and we are bombing Arab homes...so where do we expect the victims to go?

Sorry but I don’t understand what you’re telling us here. What kind of German migrants are coming to Bulgaria? Nazi’s or those trying to escape the far right?

Well said. There’s another huge problem looming. As global warming floods low lying countries millions are going to be on the move.
A hidden problem is the idiocy of political correctness that forbids us criticising religious practice and tradition. Would Europe be so traumatised if today’s flood of immigrants weren’t largely muslim? Often when I hear the term ‘religious freedom’ I read ‘right to be biggoted’ and that applies to Christians, Muslims and the murderous kind of Buddhist running rampant in Sth East Asia.
As to Mexicans and others flooding into America I can see the problems but wonder how a nation, essentially just like Australia, made up largely of migrants and their descendants can now turn off the tap. We also need to face the fact a large percentage of those fleeing to the West are doing so because the West has been bombing the hell out of their native lands.
As to illegal and legal immigrants bringing diseases into Western countries that problem is as nothing compared to the ease with which we can all now fly from one nation to another in days, if not overnight, carrying diseases often still in their dormant phase. Another problem I see manifest in the US is the opportunism many rich Americans have indulged in by employing illegal immigrants at disgustingly low wages as servants, factory and farm workers. These are usually the same people who hate unionism, the only proven way to maintain a decent living wages. They can’t have it both ways.
The Human Race is insane.

Thinking some more about 'taking sugar off the table.' I have a Sister-in-Law, then living in El Centro, Imperial Valley, California.....now in San Diego I think. Her Husband grew alfalfa. I reckon everyone on that farm was Mexican, and likely illegal. SIL had a Mexican housekeeper, also likely illegal. El Centro is very close to the Border. In his car, we went down to Mexico and returned...and no-one at the Border (Calexico I think) batted an eyelid. Just drove virtually straight through. No search of the car for whatever might have been there. Further, I doubt I had a right to be entering Mexico being an Aussie, but no-one cared to even ask me. I was a tad uneasy but BIL assured me no one will care. They didn't.

The healthcare system in America is fucked, regardless of illegals.

I'm not an expert on US health system, but ass I understand it If it weren't for the number of illegals the hospital probably wouldn't have received the funding to
open the ER anyway.

Texan wrote:My dad couldn't give his construction company away when he retired because of having to compete with illegal alien labor working off the books

Construction companies usually die of when owners retire. Unless he had some major contracts he could sell as goodwill, no one pays for 'The Texan Construction Pty Ltd' if 'The Texan' is no longer there. They hang out their own shingle and build up their own customer base. It's far cheaper. The biggest asset in your dads business was your dad, and he was retiring. What assets were potential buyers buying?
Also, How much of your dads profit over the years was derived from paying cheaper labor costs to illegals?

I think it's to easy to blame all your woes on illegals. I don't doubt they bring with them certain issues, but if you think building a wall or stopping illegals will solve all your problems you have a big surprise coming your way. Also keep in mind that I have no idea of your personal circumstances and am speaking generally.

I won't argue. I'd say: don't lock your door and post on a moslim forum that you're all for OPEN BORDERS.

Exactly. While America was formed on mainly Christian British, Irish and German immigrants and hard working men, Germany and France and such dumpsters rely on low IQ invasions from the Middle East.

The Latinos are not far different from Bulgarian gypsies and French dindus, plus Arab welfare suckers.
