Uh ... California ...

California beers just don't measure up to what we have up north of California. :bgrin :beer

Yes, 77 IBU. Fixed it.

Good stuff. You wouldn't like it. You should buy some for Monk, John, and the rest of the crew here. :bgrin

I was drinking some very nice milk stout from the Margaret River region yesterday.

For our American friends, Margaret River is a wine region in south western Australia - popular for surfing too.

This is a very tasty drop indeed:

"Milk stout"

I don't believe I've ever had a stout called a milk stout. Certainly does sound creamy.

Had a great IPA from the Portland Brewing Company today called "Ink and Roses IPA".

https://www.portlandbrewing.com/about/

6.5%, 70 IBU

Look at the head on this baby! It was thick and creamy and hung around, leaving lace all over my Lucky Shot glass.

Hazy and hoppy. I really liked this beer.

Wish I could send y'all a bottle or two.

I enjoyed it much more than I thought I would.

There are a few breweries making it.

Quite expensive, though:

Drinking an Australian beer

Young Henry’s “Running with the devil Rum & Raisin Brown Ale”

I think even Aussie would like this one.

Pours with a nice thick head that hangs around, an orangy-brown sort of color, not overcarbonated. 2/3 for appearance.

Smell: malt-caramel.

Taste caramelly. Taste does not hang around. Right level of bitterness—this is NOT an IPA. Adequately balances the malt/caramel.

So 3/7 for smell and taste. 5/10.

The color gave it away, crystal malt in the grist. But just lack of real flavor unless you LOVE caramel.

Today I spotted a variety pack from 10 Barrel Brewing (Bend, OR) and bought it. 12 beers, $18.00. That's $1.50 per beer. I still say you guys should revolt over high beer prices.

Anyways, this one is called "Young Squeezy".

Packed with flavor, very hazy. Citrusy hops that remind of grapefruit. What they say ...

"Some may call the "New England IPA" a trend, some call it a style, we call it wicked good. With a soft malt profile, low IBU, and a huge tropical hop profile, it drinks just like fruit juice."

6.2%, 50 IBUs

It poured with a modest head which I had already drank up when I took the picture.

50IBUs is not much for an IPA.

Wish I could brew again. I will, in Tassie, just hard to wait! Lots of new hops for me to explore!

New book out I would love to get—when the house is built!

The New IPA: Scientific Guide to Hop Aroma and Flavor
by Scott Janish

That would be good with bitters too, esp the Extra Special Bitter, closest thing to IPA for like 150 years, until craft and home brewers rediscovered the style. Porter another rediscovered style, few are real porters with amber and brown malt tho, none are as strong as the original porters especially the “stout porter” or strong porters!

Still in 1904 a housemaid in England would receive 8 pints of London Porter as part of her wages. Need it too: 14 hour days, everything manual labor—no vacuum cleaners, gas stoves, pop up toasters—and several flights of stairs to navigate—no elevators!

From their "Just Tapped" series ...

Brut IPA

Easy drinking, a little fruity, like notes of plum or mango.

35 IBU, 6.4%

Very nice thirst quencher.

Most beer here is half that price.

$40 or $50 for a carton of 24.

35 IBU not REALLY an IPA. But I like that style, plenty hop and malt flavor and aroma.

I made a beer, a bitter or pale ale, worked out how much malt I needed, then added a kilo malt, stopped sparging a bit early, last runnings thicker than normal. This was all Maris Otter (or Golden Promise, a similar pale ale malt of high quality) malt and I used just Goldings hops.

You get a real intensity of flavor with just one malt. It was a great beer. My uncle from England, set up and ran a metal fabricating business looked at my 50L kettle, chiller and 52L esky (cooler) and laughed “Can you make a quid from this?” but when drinking that beer he said several times “This is a really well made beer.”

Will have a carport, make it twice as long as needed, back half for brewing and washing/milling/pressing apples and pears. Pity it can’t be on the kitchen side but nevermind, will have tap, drain, plenty power outlets and lights. Some of this washing etc will be done very late autumn to early winter, want plenty cover against the elements!

Be nice to brew again: half size, 30L kettle not 50L! A temperature controlled urn as hot liquor tank, 20L esky as mash tun and away I go. Two small brews combined make a nice full size batch. No more 14% Russian Imperial Stouts {sob!} but there you go!
