Notre Dame Cathedral burning

Postby HBS Guy » 16 Apr 2019, 08:27

This is sad:

Flames have ripped through the historic Notre-Dame Cathedral in central Paris, causing the roof to collapse and dark plumes of smoke to drift into the French capital.

Firefighters are actively working to extinguish the blaze, which broke out at the nearly 900-year-old cathedral on Tuesday morning (Australian time).

The medieval church’s spire, which is 90 meters high and weighs 250 tonnes, made of lead, was dramatically brought down, drawing gasps and moans of disbelief from onlookers.

I have been in that cathedral, once to look at the architecture and the rose window, another time to enjoy the organ recital then leave before the late Mass began. Sad that that is gone.

I have also been to Chartres Cathedral. Magic afternoon: with a yank I had met in Paris we took the train to Chartres then walked through narrow curved Medieval streets to the Cathedral. Nothing much to look at outside especially with one spire surrounded by scaffolding so inside. Oh my, the organist must have been practising the music for the next Sunday and was playing, I am sure, a piece by Monteverdi. In the empty church you could sense the sound travelling the length of the church then bouncing off the back wall and back again. Then we turned and, oh my god! The late afternoon winter sun was hitting the enormous rose window practically horizontally, beautiful, intricate stained glasswork.

Do yourselves a favor and do some Google image searches on those Cathedrals.

Very sad.

I'm so glad I got to visit it in person last year.

I went there on my birthday last year.

Spent an hour or so looking around, and then went to the famous Shakespeare Bookshop nearby.

It's a nice part of Paris, and the Cathedral is very impressive.

So glad that I decided to visit it after lunch.

It was a spur of the moment, last minute decision.

They claim that they managed to rescue most of the treasures stored inside. I'm glad they did.

This was heartbreaking news.
So I hear, there are some billionaires donating hundreds of million$ to rebuild it, but......it's not the same, it's not 850 years old, this is what gave it some awe, to think, so long ago, it was built, magnificently.

I had never been to Paris/France, my parents did, some 35 years ago, to see such iconic structures on their tour. They seemed to be very impressed and loved Paris. That was my memoirs of their return, and talking about it.
My daughter went there also, and she loved it. So I guess, I should go there one day, I am just sorry I never went sooner to see that Notre Dame Cathedral in it's original splendour.

I wonder how much money the Roman Catholic Church will put in to revive this incredible building.

We've heard pledges, but not a word from the RC Church. They're happy. , no doubt, to allow all the brainwashed to pay... leaves them more money to fight sexual abuse charges in courts throughout the world.

I heard the RC church does not like the Notre Dame.

Have no basis to believe it or not

Churches never use their own money, they always use someone else's. Notre dame cathedral has beautiful architecture, but it is also the place where many tortures and abuse occurred over the centuries, it also stinks terribly, as does the entire of Paris and most other European countries.

Those that built it were treated awfully, with no pay or sustenance, they had to work and provide for themselves, which is the way religion works.

I is true I'd rather it was razed to the ground.. an edifice of horror, despite it's former beauty.

As a student, of architecture, it was a marvel.

Shows you just what humans can do when driven by the whip , starvation and the promise of eternal hellfire. .

Are we not passed all that.? :sad No, we are not.

The trend was set. Someone walked into St. Patrick’s Cathedral in NY with 2 gas cans and a lighter.
