I did manage to take the head off my 50cc motor bike to steel brush the carbon/soot deposit form the top of the cylinder. Then pull the muffler out of the exhaust pipe and apply a blowtorch to it, burn off all the oil and gunk. All fun and games until I managed to cross-thread one of the long bolts holding the head on top of the cylinder.

But I LOVE watching YouTubes by mechanics aka people who KNOW what they are doing restore engines and cars. I could watch those all day—my own work, jealously guarded, safely tucked away. Wait a minute, I am fucking retired!

Now “they” are going to restore an old VW bug. No, not botanists {sigh!} M E C H A N I C S !


It really is like watching the restoration of a Renaissance piece of art, sort of.

How did you manage to do that? Head bolts are fairly robust. If it doesn't twist into the threads easily it can only mean two things: Crap/rust in the threads or you're in too much of a hurry. If I'm having difficulties getting it right I just close my eyes and trust my fingers to feel when it's right.

Back in 1979 I bought a 1960 Morris Minor in Perth, cleaned it up, replaced the starter "pull" wire with a GM "electric" one, drove it to Sydney where I stayed for a year. People who noticed the W.A. number plates didn't believe me when I said that I drove it across the Nullarbor. I later drove it down to Melbourne where I sold it for a profit.

Yes, it was, but I had to stop every now and then to unclog the blowflies. But seriously, the Morris ran like a sewing machine all the way from Perth to Syndey but I actually got three (yes, three!) punctures in Adelaide and I was only there for a couple of days. Fuck, I was lucky!

Hehehe twit soldered a wire directly to ground, wondered why he had a short to ground. Found his mistake tho and fixed it and recovered the data (photos and videos) for the customer.
