In the Civil War “mines” meant coal etc mines or tunnels dug under enemy fortifications for the purpose of exploding a heap of gun powder under said fortifications.

The mines, on land and in water were called torpedoes.

At the invasion by the Union navy of Mobile Bay one ship was sunk or damaged after hitting a torpedo causing hesitation on the remaining ships. Farragut, the Flag Officer in charge of the fleet, made, perhaps, the remark “Damn the torpedoes, full steam ahead!”

Sherman considered torpedoes [landmines] “inhuman.”

What item was the biggest corrupting influence in the civil war? The corruption and what it dealt in is estimated to have lengthened the war by a year.

I haven't been reading The Battle Cry of Freedom lately. But from what I've read so far, I would say it was the South's agricultural trade and how it owned the southern politicians and military.

Yes—Cotton! The US Treasury wanted the cotton, traders were totally unscrupulous, they would get a permit, buy cotton, pay with gold—the gold would be used to buy arms etc. Traders would bribe army officials to trade beyond the union lines, get space for their cotton on trains heading north. Poor US Grant had his father acting for 3 Jewish brothers, sent them all back north.

The cotton trade allowed the South to buy materiel from overseas until the last port, Wilmington in NC was captured by a union force. The union was pretty close to bankruptcy by the end of the war.

Civil wars are different!

A word that can describe a person or a type of beer.

E.g. Bitter—Joe Blow is a very bitter person since he didn’t get his promotion and a bitter is a beer with more hops than other beers of the same strength.
