Columbus Police Fatally Shoot Black Teen Who Called Them for Help, Aunt Says

COLUMBUS—A Columbus police officer shot and killed a Black teenage girl on Tuesday afternoon just as a guilty verdict was being handed down in the Derek Chauvin murder case, a family member said.

The shooting victim has not been officially identified, but was named as 15-year-old Makiyah Bryant by a relative early Tuesday evening.

“She was a good kid. She was loving,” Hazel Bryant, who said the child was her niece, told reporters on the east side of Columbus. “She was 15 years old. She didn’t deserve to die like a dog in the street.”

Bryant said her niece has been living in a foster home on the east side of Columbus where the fatal shooting took place. She said several adult women had come to the foster home and started an altercation with the teenager, who called police and her biological father and grandmother for help. She grabbed a knife to defend herself, Bryant said.

According to Bryant, who said she had been told of the events by Makiyah’s grandmother and father, Makiyah was in front of the house fending off a physical assault when police arrived, and she had already dropped the knife in the yard. But police shot her four times without any warning, she said.

“The police are going to lie. I’m so thankful that someone from the family was actually on the scene,” Bryant said. “The police are going to lie. The police are going to cover up for themselves. They don't care. At this point, I feel like they’re just out to kill Black people. They’re not here to protect and serve. That isn’t happening. That’s been over a long time ago. They’re not here to protect and serve. They’re here to kill Black folks.”

The Columbus Dispatch reported that police officers were sent to the scene after a 911 caller reported an attempted stabbing, saying a female was trying to stab them.

Bryant disputed information circulating in local media that Makiyah had tried to stab someone and appeared to be a threat, saying Columbus police had released false information to explain the shooting. “I’m overwhelmed,” Hazel said. “It’s awful.”

In an interview with The Daily Beast, Bryant’s great-grandmother Ila compared Makiyah’s death to that of Breonna Taylor, who was shot and killed during a no-knock raid on her apartment in March 2020.

“It looks to me like that’s what the police wanted to do, to kill her. I’m just trying to figure out why,” Ila Bryant said. “We have to remember that we should love each other.”

Her mother, Paula Bryant, told 10 WBNS, “She was a very loving, peaceful little girl. She was an honor-roll student, and Makiyah had a motherly nature about her. She promoted peace.”

A woman identified as Tay Jones wrote on Facebook that she had witnessed the shooting and posted video purportedly from the scene. She said the 15-year-old had a knife “because somebody tried to jump her.” The white police officer who shot her never told her to put down the knife, according to Jones.

The teen was transported to a nearby hospital, Mount Carmel East, where she succumbed to the injuries sustained in the shooting, local station NBC 4 reported. The department has reportedly contacted the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation to review the use of deadly force. The police department’s public information office did not respond to a request for comment.

About 100 people gathered in downtown Columbus late Tuesday to protest the shooting. They chanted, “Say her name! Makiyah Bryant!” and “Black Lives Matter!”

Hana Abbur-Rahim, the lead organizer of Black Abolitionist Collective Ohio, told The Daily Beast the shooting was proof of an alarming trend.

“It’s important to recognize that Black women are being killed by the police. Why can’t we be safe in our own homes?” she said.

Video from the scene shortly after the shooting showed a person lying on the ground in jeans and bright sneakers as bystanders yelled at police.

Columbus mayor Andrew Ginther wrote on Twitter, “This afternoon a young woman tragically lost her life. We do not know all of the details. There is body-worn camera footage of the incident.”

The killing occurred just as the verdict was being announced in the murder trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts in the death of George Floyd, an unarmed, 46-year-old Black man, in May 2020.

Local Columbus activist K.C. Taynor of Exodus Nation told The Daily Beast the latest police killing made it impossible to celebrate the Chauvin verdict.

“It’s another murder,” he said. “They’re animals. They treat us like animals.”

yes, I stopped after the shooting though. I didn't see any reason for the cops to shoot but I'm not wearing my glasses. I thought maybe I missed something.
The girl who was shot is first seen on the footage trying to stab another girl who falls to the ground. She then goes after a second girl who ended up with her back to a car as the girl with the knife closed in on her, winding up to thrust with the knife. That's when the officer fired.

ok ... upon viewing it again I see it now. When i first saw it , it looked like the girl that was shot was the one standing next to the girl in pink when police first arrived.

I really should wear my glasses more often

Now why didn't the cops use tazers? That's what they're for aren't they?

Sorry squire, I have seen enough death and waste of human life, that I can't watch actual killing videos. The cop is LEGALLY correct to kill while protecting against the certain death of another. I personally would have fired a warning shot in the air, to get the little girls attention. And, then shouted my commands, before rushing in to take the knife away. I know that this is illegal, but the alternative for me is unthinkable. Shooting to death a 15 yo little girl, who was supposedly attacking another with a knife. A gun definitely. But a knife, an ax, a stick, or a broken piece of glass, definitely not!!

Since I can't watch this video, let me ask some questions. Were any of the other children actually stabbed? This would add credence to the claim, that the knife was only used as a threat. Were any of the other kids armed? Were the other adults in the area trying to stop this situation? As John asked, why weren't tasers used? Or, will this be another "unintentional equipment selection claim? Does anyone know how many armed/unarmed 15yo White girls have been killed by police? NONE!!

Can you just imagine. An off-duty cop walks by a state school, and sees a child attacking another student with a knife. He shoots the child in the back, and she dies on the playground, in front of all the other students. Has he committed a legal crime? Is he a fuck'n cowardly homicidal maniac?

I'm afraid that under no circumstances(other than a gun involved), would I take the life of a child. Even legally! To me this is just another legally cowardly act. Especially, when you give immature adult scared cowards the power over life and death.

Not when someone is actively stabbing someone. A couple of the limitations of the Taser are range and accuracy. When it is fired, two darts are fired, both connected to the Taser by wires. In order for the Taser to work, both darts must make contact and stick. If one misses, it doesn't work. As the darts travel away from the Taser, the distance between them expands, and the slower they go. So the further away that the target is, the less likely it is that both darts will hit the target and stick. The maximum range of those darts is about 7 yards, but the Taser is most likely to hit the target effectively at about 3 yards and closer. It is also far harder to get an accurate Taser shot with both darts when the target is moving rapidly and unpredictably and close to the Taser's maximum range.

Taser's are generally used against unarmed people who are fighting and resisting arrest, not people who are actively assaulting the officer or another person with a deadly or dangerous weapon.

We must remember that had the officer fired the Taser instead of his gun in this case, the Taser very likely would have failed, allowing the girl in pink to be stabbed. Had she been stabbed in the chest or neck, she could have died.

The officer's choice to use the gun was correct and consistent with his training.

Not when someone is actively stabbing someone.
Was this 15 yo girl actively stabbing someone? This fact should be easy to verify. There would be at least one other victim needing medical attention. Other than the little girl with a knife. Please tell me that at least someone was actually stabbed.

How long had this ruckus been going on, before the cops actually arrived? How many victims did this child actually stab before the cops arrived? She was the only one armed. Surely, there should have been someone bleeding on the streets?

The officer's choice to use the gun was correct and consistent with his training.
There is no training in the world, that could prepare an armed grown man, to shot and kill a 15 yo little girl wielding a knife. He should have fired his gun in the air, just to get her attention first. And, then screamed his commands, or tackled her. Whatever respect cops had earned in that community, ended with the deliberate, but excusable, killing of a 15 yo girl. A 15 yo little girl who somehow manage NOT stab numerous unarmed combatants, before and after the cops arrived. Again, more credence to the theory, that the knife was only used as a threat.

You can rationalize the cop's action, and legally they were correct. But it takes a special kind of man, to shoot down a 15 yo girl with a knife. Certainly, NOT a fuck'n hero.

If you watch the video I provided, the incident is shown in real time and in slow motion. I don’t like watching shootings either, btw.

There would be at least one other victim needing medical attention.
Not necessarily. As you can see in the video, if you watch it, her potential stabbing victims are doing everything they can to avoid getting stabbed.

Other than the little girl with a knife.
She is not a “little girl”. She is 16. She is just as big or bigger than many adult women.

Please tell me that at least someone was actually stabbed.
Almost. She had trapped a potential victim against a car and wound back her arm to stab when bullets hit her, stopping her.

How long had this ruckus been going on, before the cops actually arrived?
Several minutes, but irrelevant.

How many victims did this child actually stab before the cops arrived?
None, but irrelevant.

She was the only one armed. Surely, there should have been someone bleeding on the streets?
Not necessarily.

She was not an 8 year old, and there was no way the officer could know her age. She was just as big as many adult women.

There IS training that prepares officers to recognize deadly and dangerous weapons, and it is their job to stop a person if they are carrying out a potentially lethal assault with such a weapon. If you watch the video, you will see that he was too far away from her to grab her or tackle her as she wound up to stab the second woman. To prevent the second woman from receiving one or more potentially lethal stab wounds, he had to shoot.

He should have fired his gun in the air, just to get her attention first. And, then screamed his commands, or tackled her.
Warning shots are prohibited by most police agencies. And this all happened in a matter of seconds. There was no time for warning shots and commands. By the time he did those things, the second woman would have been stabbed.

She made a determined and deliberate attempt to stab two women. It’s right there on the video. The first girl looks like she was trying to run backwards, tripped and fell onto her back, at which time her assailant turned her attention to the second woman. She was just lucky.

He didn’t have any choice.

I’m not calling him or any officer who is forced to shoot “a hero”. He did, however, protect an unarmed person from a potentially lethal assault or very serious physical injury. He did his job.

I know from experience that the vast, vast majority of police officers don’t want to have to shoot anyone, much less a female, and much less a 16 year old. That is not what they were hoping for when they chose that line of work.

There is one other thing that the video reveals. It’s an adult male standing around who is noticeable right after the shooting. WTF was he doing all the time before the police arrived? I have a lot of questions about why he didn’t do anything. I can only guess, but I’ll bet he did nothing other than watch. No heroics from him, sorry to say.

The left won't be happy until local law enforcement has been rendered useless with red tape, defunding, and disarming. Only then can Democrats in Washington introduce federal police. I don't think a bigger policeman is what the left had in mind, but that's what they will get.

I wonder if you would ask the second girl/woman.....the one who was about to be stabbed/murdered......if she appreciated the quick & decisive action taken by this thoughtful officer who was 'just' doing his job.....She might be grateful to have felt his heroism that day, rather than the cold metal slab of a morgue that night.

To this officer, my prayers be with you.....you will have many dark memories, & a difficult road yet to travel.

To the knife wielding, potential stabber/murderer........may she rest in perpetual peace in the warm grace of her Loving Creator.

I thought the same thing. While it is all the rage these days to instantly vilify and condemn the officer before even knowing the facts (as we saw in the OP), I wondered how the girl who was saved from being stabbed felt about it.
